Monday Poetry Prompt: Sabbath

break-18987_1280.jpg

Even though it’s Monday, this week let’s write a Sabbath poem. It could be a Saturday or Sunday poem, depending upon your religious upbringing, but try to focus on the “day of rest” aspect. After sleeping in, post in the comments below.

    Mmm butter n biscuits
    Daddy’s cooking breakfast today
    Must be Sunday
I can smell the bacon from my bed
Blackberry jam is calling my name
    Coffee’s brewing
Smelling better than it tastes (adult me wondering, Did I say that?)
Scrambling down for those soft scrambled eggs
    Better be on time
    Daddy wants his children
    To be happy soldiers
    For the war of chores
    Always a hitch, doncha know

What is the worth of a weekend day
    when one is retired?
    With no clocks to punch
those days weight the same as any other.
    Even now, elderly and alone,
she still washes the sheets on Saturday.
