April Visual Poetry Prompt

Here’s your April Visual Prompt a day early! This will be the only post for National Poetry Month. Feel free to use the American Academy of Poets poster for the month as a prompt.

Many of us are writing a poem-a-day to celebrate. I tend to use the daily prompts posted at Robert Lee Brewer’s Write Better Poetry blog but others swear by NaPoWriMo. It doesn’t matter whose prompts you use, as long as you write.

If you know of any other sites with daily prompts for the month, please comment below so I can follow them and if you’re posting a poem-a-day please link to your blog so I can follow your work too.

Good luck, poets! Here’s to a productive April. The Monday Poetry Prompt will return in May.

I’m hosting quirky prompts for the month of April, in honor of NaPoWriMo and a collaborative book written by me and Ken Tomaro. Poets can enter a contest for a free book. Details here:

    Monday Visual Poetry Prompt

    Seeing is the start
    the flicker of what is
    cacophony of light
    before words, before intent
    a joy to be shared
    simply being here

    in the painting I see
    in the mirror I see
    a poet I see
    no longer content
    to simply see
    no longer content
    to simply be

    Shared world

    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need air to breathe.
    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need water to drink.
    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need food to eat.
    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need shelter from the storm.
    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need to protect our bodies with coverings.
    I’m different. You’re different.
    We both need rest.
    I’m different. You’re different.
We both need to feel a sense of community, belonging and love.
    I’m different. You’re different.
    We worship differently.
    We eat different foods.
Our homes don’t all look the same.
    I’m different. You’re different.
    We breathe the same air.
    We drink the same water.
    Live on the same planet.
    Bask in the same sun.
We allow our differences to divide us.
Why can’t our differences unite us?
    I’m different. You’re different.
