    I Should Be Superstitious

Don’t come near, you might catch
    the bug of disappointment.

I drop what I want to eat onto
the sand or mud or street.

    I miss my flights,
    I miss the point.

Nothing goes the way I want.
    I don’t know why I should try.

Perhaps I’m tailed by a spell
to be a black cloud all my life.

The man I want to love walks by
into the arms of someone else.

    I hear he’s drunk, can’t hold a job.
    Disappointment is my friend.

    Disappointment

    O’ thy light of happiness,
Do not leave me in a constant state of darkness.
Linger on me a moment longer.
This! O’ this will not make me stronger.
    Stay! O’ thy pleasant light.
You do not have to be bright.
Just light, so all things are not consumed.
Stay with me; light of life, do not leave me entombed.
I wish not to a labor a bemoan.
For the love you show can never be cloned.
My soul cannot bear this separation.
I wish not to feel this station.
    Petty? Never!
A state I wish never to sever.
    Do not admonish the emotion.
Rise, fall, never leave such great potion.
    Never greedy.
    No! Not needy.
    Wanting, longing, deepest insight.
Never leave me hanging for thy light.
    Detest not.
    Disappoint not.
    Walk with me.
    Teach me.
Shine on the dull recess of my soul,
joy, love, light, on me dole.
Let your mercy lay on my desire
Disappoint me not, light never expire.
