Monday Poetry Prompt: Cardinal

This week let’s write a cardinal poem. I saw a couple of cardinals in a tree yesterday. I’m referring to the bird not the Catholics but your poem can be about either of those or even the adjectival form of the word. Dazzle us with your bright red poetry in the comments below.

“You know when you see a Cardinal outside the window
someone you love who has passed is saying hello.”

So who are you Mr. Cardinal
    feathers ratty
    and your bald head
    black
    looking prehistoric
like a some predator from days gone

    Beauty of fine plumage
    long lost to youth
you eye me through the back window
    ground dead and cold
without the snowy coverings of fresh winter

Who of the dead are you
    one hundred billion
    once like me
    lost to time
    what soul calls to me
    now

    two days later
    I find you dead
    all the fauna on you
    long gone
    looking for more warm abodes

    I dig a small hole
    and lay you in it
a thank you to you, Mr. Cardinal
    and to whatever soul
    you came to me for

and then the flurries began to fly

    Red. A scarlet messenger
    Spotted on the Edge
    Of the street.
    Hopping
    Hoping to fly
    Searching
    For nourishment
    Dancing
    For a purpose
    But not to the song
    Of the people
    No.
    This messenger
    sings to his own.
