Monday Poetry Prompt: New

This week let’s write a new poem— a poem about the state of newness. And it should also be a new poem, don’t just pull one from the archives. That’s the whole point of the Monday Poetry Prompt, after all. Post your newest in the comments below.

  1. I pulled the tightly-stretched protective plastic off
    thick and clear
    with no air pockets anywhere
    the display
    four lines by 32 characters
    monochrome letters on the film
rich black against a perfectly empty gray background
    now revealed
    stark and transparent

    I look at this
    the of smell of plastic
    and cleaned circuit board

    It is mine now

I plug the cord into the wall
    and wait with anticipation
for something to come up on the screen

  2. Just posted my poem, https://bartbarkerpoet.com/2020/12/28/prescription/

Let’s rip the foil off this new year
like an unopened bottle of pills…

  3. Brand New

I decided to go one day, this day, without thinking, “What If?”
My high expectations led me to imagined assumptions.
My imagined assumptions led me to real disappointments.
I mean so what the guy I adored from a distance didn’t take the nonverbal hint?
So what I didn’t find a bag of money lying around?
And so what I didn’t get the one phone call that would change my life?
No, those things didn’t happen for me in the past days,
But they will happen for me one day.
As far as this day goes, I’m gonna let it finally be a new one.

  4. New money coming
or so they would have you think
    getting stimulus
    in my world, means squirreling
putting away for a rainy day
    then again, it’s looking cloudy.

  5. The Newness of a Year
Friday brings the newness of year 2021
like the babe depicts in many comments
so young to have shoes on the feet
so young to see what is ahead for us
so young to even make predictions
the scent of newness fills the room
like the interior of a brand new car
smelling like no other I’ve owned
making promises of a safe road ahead
but can it deliver, can this year deliver?
